When a buyer purchases more than one firearm in a single visit, the Form 4473 process requires some additional attention. While a single form can cover multiple firearms under certain circumstances, there are rules about how this is handled — and one significant additional reporting requirement for handguns.

One Form Per Transaction

A single Form 4473 can be used for a transaction involving multiple firearms. Section A of the form includes space for multiple firearm descriptions. All firearms being transferred in the same transaction to the same buyer can be listed on a single form.

The NICS check covers the buyer for the transaction — not each individual firearm. One NICS contact for the buyer is sufficient for all firearms in the transaction.

The 3310.4 Requirement for Handguns

Here's where multiple-firearm transactions get additional complexity: when a buyer purchases two or more handguns from the same dealer within five consecutive business days, ATF Form 3310.4 (Multiple Sale or Other Disposition of Pistols and Revolvers) must be filed. This applies regardless of whether the handguns are purchased in a single transaction or across multiple transactions within the five-day window.

Track this actively. If a buyer purchased a handgun on Monday and comes back Thursday to buy another, the 3310.4 requirement is triggered. The five-day window doesn't reset between visits — it runs from the first handgun purchase.

Long Guns and Multiple Sales

The 3310.4 requirement applies only to pistols and revolvers — not rifles, shotguns, or other long guns. A buyer purchasing three rifles in one transaction has no additional reporting requirement beyond the standard Form 4473.

How to List Multiple Firearms on the Form

Section A provides space for the firearm description. When multiple firearms are included, list each one with its complete description — make, model, serial number, type, caliber/gauge, and barrel length. If the space on the form is insufficient, an attachment listing the additional firearms with the same information can be attached and referenced on the form.
